View all » Something is going awry with charter schools in the City of Philadelphia, as eighteen of them are now under investigation by the Feds.

Charges of favoritism, mismanagement and just plain misuse of funds are aimed at the publicly funded entities. Some of these schools are receiving millions of dollars from taxpayers.

Employees of these schools are getting stranger-than-usual salaries and look like they are making sweetheart deals with real estate companies: all on the taxpayer's dime.

This is just another local story that gives the Philadelphia area a black eye. As if Lower Merion making their own version of "To Catch A Predator" wasn't enough:

"There has not been any other state or city that has had this kind of charge made against so many [charters] in a confined period of time," said Jeanne Allen, president of the Center for Education Reform, also in Washington.

It's amusing how this kind of investigation is coming down strictly on charter schools, though. How much nepotism and mismanagement is going on in regular public schools?

Once again, this is proof positive that any government-run entity cannot be trusted by taxpayers. Charter schools were meant to be a taxpayer-funded way to ensure parents with kids who want to learn get to learn, to steer parents away from the idea of school vouchers or, God forbid, have them choose a private school over a public one. The obvious conclusion to make here is that the public school system is Bernie Madoff-esque trickery that gouges and siphons money from the average taxpayer and expects more and more every year.

While charter schools may be safer havens from the kinds of crime, violence and general stupidity that occurs at public schools, they've also become a safe haven for white collar criminals who feel they are above the law.
