Devastated Illegal with 4.0 GPA Unable to Attend UC Berkeley
contracostatimes.com — Although the 17-year-old Gladys Castro carries a 4.09 grade-point average and has been accepted to the university, she cannot apply for government loans because she's an illegal immigrant and doesn't have a Social Security number. When she was 8 years old, her family fled the crime and violence of their hometown in Jalisco, Mexico.

on 05/17/2010 There's a university or two in Mexico she could attend. I know, I lived there for over a year. Oh, and by the way, she could also enroll in a Mexican university, and attend a U.S. university as an exchange student. Yes, she is not getting grants and loans, but why should she? Will Mexico subsidize my education if I want to attend a school there, after moving there illegally? Of course not.

then, when she wipes the tears away, she should get in line to become a legal immigrant.

Give her a choice...... A) Move back to her native country or B) pay back the 100,000 she cost tax payers.

on 05/18/2010 The entitlement attitude among illegals is absurd.

I'll admit that if I were born in Mexico, I'd try to come here illegally. However, if I got caught, I wouldn't complain.

I wouldn't bitch and moan after getting a FREE education that I can't get even more FREE grants or loans. I'd realize that loan money is reserved for actual citizens.

Things have gone far enough, it's time to draw the line and refuse to permit any more entitlements for illegals.

on 05/18/2010 She is a citizen of Mexico. There is absolutely no reason why the US should pay for the education of the citizens of another country. The fact that she's freeloaded this long is no reason for us to continue to fund her education.

on 05/18/2010 It's funny because the Mexican government will pay residents to go to college in the US if they agree to go back to Mexico and work for two years.

I knew a girl that became a doctor, went back and did her time, then came back. She even got a job in the state Department of Health.

It can be done LEGALLY.

on 05/18/2010 a couple things stuck out for me in this article as an atheist libertarian on digg.

"California has already dumped $100,000 in free education (on her),"

WTF?!?!? 100 grand for a K-12 education?!!you can go to a prep school with that kind of money instead of a ***** public school.

"An evangelical Christian, Castro would ask the campus Christian club to pray for her situation, the request couched in vague terms so as not to let on about her status. "

lol, fail.

"Although the 17-year-old Kaiser High School senior carries a 4.09 grade-point average and has been accepted to the university, she cannot apply for government loans because she's an illegal immigrant and doesn't have a Social Security number...In the meantime, she plans to attend Riverside Community College in the summer and fall while she figures out how to pay for Berkeley."

Wait, wtf? so this whole article is about how she can't pay to go a top school so she expects a free ride or something?! or she wants other tax payers to subsidize her education? ***** that.

on 05/18/2010 In America, an illegal immigrant has received a free education all the way through High School and is upset that she cannot get Government grants to offset the cost of College.

Meanwhile, Let’s take a look at Mexico’s immigration laws:

According to Reglamento de la Ley General Poblacion—Mexico’s population and immigration law passed in 2000—the federal, local, and municipal police must work with federal immigration authorities to arrest illegal immigrants.

Article 67 says “Authorities, whether federal, state or municipal are required to demand that foreigners prove their legal presence in the country before attending to any issues.”

Illegal immigration is a felony in Mexico, and if convicted, an illegal immigrant can be sent to prison for up to two years. But that’s not all. Deported immigrants who try to return to Mexico can actually be punished with a 10 year prison sentence, and those who violate their Visa can be thrown in prison for up to six years. Also, any Mexican citizen who helps an illegal immigrant could face criminal charges.

Other key points you should know about Mexico’s immigration laws:

- Foreigners who are considered a threat to economic or national interests can be deported.

- Those foreigners who don’t have the “necessary funds for their sustenance” may be deported.

- Foreigners can’t be a burden to taxpayers, so there is no welfare, food stamps, healthcare, or other government assistance.

- Foreigners may not protest or have any demonstrations. This can lead to deportation.

- Citizenship is granted on a basis “according to (the immigrant’s) possibilities of contributing to national progress.”

- Naturalized Mexicans (those granted citizenship by means other than birth) may not hold dual citizenship and can’t run for most government posts.

The more you know.....

on 05/18/2010 This is the type of person that should be put on the fast-track to citizenship. I usually consider illegals criminals, but she obviously didn't enter the country illegally under her own volition so I don't think many would have a problem with her getting a temporary school visa while she works on getting citizenship.

Also, if her marks are so high, she may not get the selection of schools she wants, but I'm sure she could get a full scholarship somewhere.

on 05/17/2010 It would have benefited this country more if we didn't have to pay for her education leading up to college. There are plenty of other smart, legal citizens that will be denied college for one reason or another, why is she so special? Is she the only student in America with a 4.0?

Thread / Reply+106 diggs +121 / -15 ileftfark
on 05/18/2010 I'll absolve the girl of any wrongdoing, as she was brought here as an 8-year old child. And I don't see an issue with the government refusing a loan to someone living here illegally. The "injustice" of the situation rests squarely on the shoulders of her parents. According to the article, the left Jalisco for some place safer, which I can understand. They chose to enter a country illegally, and without a SS or Green Card, I'd imagine that they haven't contributed anything other than illegal labor to shady employers. The girl seems bright, and hopefully there's some kind of resolution that can be reached (ideally, with her becoming a citizen), but the only people at fault for this situation are her parents.

Unrelated to the above, the GPA system in high schools is totally *****. Most of the kids in my honors classes graduated with a 4.5+ due to weighted programs and schools doing whatever they can to 'improve scores' each year. The number has lost the little meaning it had left.

So you support letting unskilled, uneducated, undocumented people into this country, right? What about health screening, learning the constitution, being able to communicate in primary language of the country you are moving too?

on 05/18/2010 illegal:
forbidden by law or statute.

criminal: (the most relevant to this discussion)
guilty of crime.

crime:
A crime is a wrongdoing classified by the state or Congress as a felony or misdemeanor.

A crime is an offense against a public law.

thus your argument is incorrect. parking violation does make you a criminal, being and illegal immigrant does make you a criminal.

if you do not pay your parking fine you could go to jail.

on 05/18/2010 I don't get it.
So its not OK to enter the country illegally, but once here they should have equal access to free education, health-care, social programs, etc.
If you want to advocate open borders, then go ahead do it, and be honest about it.
Otherwise, if illegal immigration is a crime that it makes absolutely no sense build all sorts of programs to support illegible immigrants. In fact, quite the opposite, everything should be done to make it difficult for them to get away with it.
Want you kids in school? Fine, back to Mexico.
Don't enroll your kids in school--that's against the law. Back to Mexico.
Need health care. Fine, once your medically stable, back to Mexico (with the bill).
But that's so cruel! Fine, don't come here illegally. Stay in Mexico.
Oh, also, you will be billed for the deportation costs.
