South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint reiterated Sunday that there will be political consequences to Republican members of Congress who do not insist on spending cuts to balance the budget. DeMint also said, contrary to those who say otherwise, even if the debt ceiling is not raised, there is no danger of the government defaulting, according to Politico.

Jim DeMint, spending cuts"We won’t default,” DeMint said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “If the president decides sometime in October or November that he is not going to pay our bills because he refuses to balance the budget six or eight years out, then I think Americans ought to know that.”

Budget issues need to be resolved without resorting to tax hikes, and Congress should consider entitlement cuts and eliminating burdensome regulations, DeMint said.
