#64 Robert Rowling $4,100 million

#64 Robert Rowling
$4,100 million

Last year invested $600 million with Carl Icahn in struggling Guaranty Financial Group; company filed for bankruptcy in August. Father founded Tana Oil & Gas 1980. Robert practiced tax law for one year; jumped over to father's firm. Duo merged Tana's production properties with Texaco (now Chevron) 1989; received $480 million in cash and stock. Bought Omni Hotels for $500 million in 1996; hotel investments now make up majority of fortune. Three years later sold rest of Tana to Unocal. Traded in half of his Chevron shares for cash and oil and gas fields 2007. Fortune off 35% in a year as energy prices plunge, recession dampens hotel demand. Other investments: Gold's Gym, Mexican retailer Waldo's.
