tar czf /vmfs/volumes/yourESXserver:storage1/yourVMname
copy to same place on new vmware box
open vmware client gui
click on vmware server itself not vm on left
click on Configuration tab in middle
double click the little disk icon to the left of yourESXserver:storage1 listing
in the popup select yourVMname, then right click yourVMname.vmx on the right and "Add to Inventory" in the right click menu
click YES to keep uid [I did anyhow]
now start the vm like normal with green arrow button since now it appears in your list of vms
change ip/hostname etc
leave original vm off on
