set input device =/dev/ums0 in xorg.conf [I have usb mouse] and then mouse worked
I had already run the moused configuartion per new handbook: rcenable moused
I also had already added the input hotplugging fix see other post http://technoninja.blogspot.com/2010/07/xorgconf-input-hotplugging-fix-to-make.html
man moused has the possible mouse device names in /dev
